What is health, anyway?
I do not know if there is a clear definition of what health is today. For many generations the definition of health was limited to physical or mental illness. If a person had not been formally diagnosed with a disease or if her mental capabilities were functioning normally she may tell others that she is healthy. This person may not have incorporated the biological implications of eating fried food everyday or the psychological implications of her anger in losing her job on her overall health.
Personally, health must incorporate biomedical issues such as nutritional impact on heart function and psychological issues such as the impact of stress on blood pressure. Health, to me, also should incorporate social aspects (such as economic status, family support, and personal happiness), environmental factors (such as living in an apartment with asbestos or living in an area with low pollution), and spiritual factors (such as a belief that a person is not alone in their struggles or that there is no higher power that will see a person through). I believe that you can be physically healthy now and have no apparent mental illness but you many not have overall health if you have a poor social network, environment, or spiritual outlook. A loss in any of the last three areas could also contribute to diminished overall health in a person’s future.
